Our first Convening17 pilot focused on SDG 4: Quality Education. We tested the hypothesis that connecting conversations across conferences would unlock greater insight into the barriers we must overcome to achieve SDG 4 by 2030.

We tested a three step process of Discover, Connect, and Scale to activate collaborations around SDG 4.

Discover: What is the urgent & important lens within SDG 4? In this case we honed in on the importance of education for displaced children. We then engaged participants to discover the root barriers we must overcome to deliver quality education.

Connect: By hosting conversations across conferences, we were able to connect ideas and insights between a wide variety of stakeholders. Through this pilot we identified root barriers including trauma informed care, security, language barriers, and economic opportunity for fathers.

Scale: As we move into the second year focused on SDG 4 we are excited to connect innovators to capital through prize funding designed to help scale innovations in trauma-informed care for displaced children.

We hosted 10 conversations between 2017 and 2019 at 10 events with over 200 participants - meeting stakeholders at the events they already attend so their perspectives could inform the broader initiative.

Dreams should not end because of conflict. Futures should not be put on hold because of war. There is no tomorrow for countries affected by conflict unless their children learn today, and not just the basics, but an education that gives them the tools and skills they need to fly.
